Truphone Updates Nokia Client, Adds Anywhere Support

anywhere_option.jpg

As another bay step on their plan towards world domination, Truphone has announced availability of their new 4.0 client for Nokia S60 devices, which allows you to make calls over WiFi or 3G at much less expensive rates. The new twist on this is called Truphone Anywhere, which allows you to use Truphone to make calls even when you're not in WiFi or 3G range.

How does this work? If you happen to be outside of WiFi or 3G range, but still have a GSM signal, you can ask that the call be routed over a PSTN gateway within your country. This gateway, which will be a national call within your country, will connect your call to the international destination at Truphone's “brilliant” rates.

The next step? A GSM SIM frm Truphone. Believe me, it's coming, and if you do a fair amount of international traveling, you'll want it! To hear more about Truphone's plans for world domination, have a listen to Alec Saunders Squawkbox from 27 May.

Special Offer for Boingo Wireless

One of my pals on Twitter ran across a particularly good deal for Boingo, which provides access on over 40,000 WiFi hotspots in the U.S. and Canada alone! Counting all the international locations, it's over 100,000 hotspots!

While if you sign up through this link, you get the first three months of North American access for $9.95 a month (normally $21.95), a better deal for WiFi-enabled mobile phones is their $7.95 a month mobile device plan. This gives you access to over 100,000 hotspots worldwide and works with Nokia S60 devices, Nokia Internet tablets, and Windows Mobile 5.0/6.0 devices.

Will you put up with Advertising to Your Mobile Phone

Is nothing sacred anymore? I just finished reading an article that said advertising to our cell phones is inevitable. I will agree with the article, that advertising on mobile phones has an enormous potential and we are probably years away from seeing anything major in this area. I do get an occasional message from my mobile carrier but usually don't give it the time of day and just delete it. To me this is a personal invasion of my time and property (my cell phone).
I personally don't see this coming along, unless, like the article says, ALL carriers agree to advertising. Can you imagine if everyone but one was advertising? Everyone would just switch over to the carrier with no advertising. AND even if they did, don't you think there would be just one smart person in this world that would offer a non-advertising cell phone service? I think you get the idea.

But, after thinking about this. The other angle might be something like: Hey, we will GIVE you a cell phone, or we will GIVE you free service, just look at our advertisement and acknowledge it. Sort of like click through points. That might work.

Marble Maze game – using orientation sensor; Nokia N95 & N82

Just looking at the Youtube video of this game is cool. The Marble Maze game uses the orientation sensor and is quite a gas if you think about it. With fat fingers like mine I am glad to see a game like this where I don't have to fumble with the small keypad on this phone.

The idea of the game is to guide your metal ball through a labyrinth with holes and not try to fall into a hole.

Here are some of the features of the game include:

  • Use of orientation sensor data of the device to control the game play
  • 40 different fields
  • Create and save your own fields (and share with friends)
  • 3 different balls, with different bounce and friction (metal, rubber and pingpong balls)
  • Saving of record times for each field
  • Tactile feedback, you can feel the ball hit the walls

Watch this video and then if you are amazed as I was, go find more info and a downloadable demo at http://cahoona.bitburners.com

The simplest and cheepest cell phone

hop1800.jpg

The name says it all. The Spartan Cell Phone from hop-on will only cost you $10. This cell phone is for the frugal at heart. No display, no bells and whistles, just a plain old keypad to make your calls with.
I think there is a growing number of consumers out there that just want to make a phone call. They're not worried about chatting online, receiving emails, or taking pictures. They just want a simple device that they can call home with. I personally, the last time I purchased a cell phone I looked for the most basic device I could find so this is something I'll surely look at a little deeper.
Go see one at hop-on.
Here are the basics of this unit:
Size: 96.6mm(D)x41.6mm(W)x14mm(H)
Weight: 77g
Bands: Dual-band 850/1900MHz or 900/1800MHz
Battery: Standard Li-Ion 600mAh
Battery Life: Talk time 4 hours; Standby time 150 hours
Ringer: Polyphonic (16 Midi)
Embedded Vibration: Yes
SIM Lock: Yes
Keypad Lock: Yes

No Shock Verizon Wireless Chose LiMo Over Android

flickr_98857402.jpg

Today I was catching up and listening to Alec Saunders' Squawk Box podcast when a bombshell was let loose-something that makes the news that Verizon Wireless chose LiMo over Google's Android make total selse: LiMo is arguably not open source. Skip ahead to about the 21:30 minute mark on the 16 May 2008 Squawk Box podcast. The major points:

  • The only thing open about LiMo is that it runs on Linux and that the APIs are relatively open, but the APIs only allow very limited functionality.
  • A fee of $400,000 a year is required to be able to contribute source code to the project.
  • You can only use commercially-friendly Open-Source licenses in your code.

Sounds a bit like what people thought about Verizon Wireless: they say they want to be open, but really, they're not going to open up. This surprise any one?

Nimbuzz Not Buzzing To Me

nimbuzz.jpg

Perhaps I'm just in a bad mood, but the latest news from Nimbuzz does not excite me. Oh sure, the client does multi-IM support-including Skype, and either supports VoIP calls over the PSTN or even VoIP with the new S60 3rd Edition client, but so what? Fring does this.

The problem I have with both Fring and Nimbuzz is that neither one seems to do anything truly revolutionary, nor do they seem to have a business model to speak of. Am I blinded by my bad mood or am I right?

Drupal for Social Publishing…

Drupal is one of the rare platforms for building social publishing applications that is built on top of a rather decent WCM platform. It has a  strong foundation with a very flexible taxonomy system which along with thousands of 3rd party modules enables you to assemble social publishing applications.
However, these modules could be your biggest problem [...]
