Skyfire To Start Beta

skyfire_espn.jpg

I got an email from the folks at Skyfire letting me know that they were about to start making their web browser available for beta testing. If you signed up before 1 March, you will be among the first group. If you signed up for the beta after 1 March, you will be part of the second group and have to wait until later.

The Skyfire browser will be available for Windows Mobile as part of this beta. It is expected to be available for Nokia S60 this summer. Given that I got an early look at the browser, I think it will be well worth the wait!

Motorola to Separate Mobile Devices Business

motorola logo

Motorola, the world's 3rd largest handset manufacturer, has finally caved in to the demands of its investors with its decision to divide the business into 2 independent, publicly-traded companies – Mobile Devices and Broadband & Mobility Solutions.

The brains behind this strategic shift believe this will improve efficiency, flexibility, and increased management focus. Mobile Devices will concentrate on design, manufacture, and sales of “compelling” mobile phones and accessories around the globe. On the other hand, Broadband & Mobility will cater to the needs of the government and other enterprises.

Hopefully, this will pave way for a real and sustainable comeback of Motorola.

Emirates Makes First Inflight Mobile Calls

mobile technology

Soon, the air up there is no longer free from annoying ringtones, incessant text messaging and calls from our mobile phones. Dubai-based Emirates is the world's first commercial airline to offer inflight mobile phone service.

According to a news article, the historic first authorized call via cellphone happened 30,000 feet above the ground from Emirates Airbus A340-300 aircraft flying from Dubai to Casablanca.

Since it's still in the initial stage, each passenger is just allowed 5 to 6 calls every flight. Moreover, sending and receiving SMS is also permitted on board.

We know mobile phones can really be annoying so Emirates set up some house rules to follow. For one, no passenger is allowed to make phone calls on night flights and all mobile handsets should be in silent mode during the entire flight to avoid disturbing other passengers.

Consumer Goods Giants Embrace Mobile Coupons

mobile marketing

Mobile coupons have found powerful allies in the form of consumer goods giants Procter & Gamble, Clorox, Del Monte, General Mills and Kimberly-Clark and retailer Kroger. According to Advertising Age, this is the biggest test of mobile coupons to date.

Under the test, consumers download Cellfire, a mobile-marketing application similar to a ringtone or mobile game, to their cellphones. That allows them to peruse Cellfire's mobile shopping mall to see which discounts are being offered. If the shopper finds one of interest, he or she “checks it off” on the phone, creating a mobile shopping list.

The choices are automatically sent to the computers at Kroger, which identifies the consumer by his or her loyalty-card number at checkout, and the discount is automatically applied there.

The objective here is to create a more relevant approach to a segment composed of 25 to 34 years old with growing families and actively shopping for different household products. If proven viable, it might be the start of mobile coupons in the mainstream market.

Mobile Banking Usage Still Below 20%

m-commerce

There are indications that mobile users are starting to warm up on mobile commerce and mobile banking which may eventually make these services. According to research firm Harris Interactive, 16 percent of mobile phone subscribers already use mobile banking services, with 60 percent of these people using the services at least once a week.

In terms of m-commerce, about a quarter of users with mobile access to the Internet now use their devices to buy goods and services online via a credit card.

Security remains the main stumbling block with 66% worrying about transmission of financial information.

“If security concerns can be quelled, the sky's the limit with consumer acceptance of mobile banking and purchase transactions. It's a very intriguing prospect for the near future, considering how people have already embraced a variety of mobile technologies beyond simple phone communications,” said Joseph Porus, vice president, Harris Interactive, in a press release.

iPhone SDK: Over 100,000 Downloads in Just 4 Days

iphone sdk

It seems every developer is out to impress the hard-to-please Steve Jobs. It turned out more than 100,000 developers have downloaded the beta iPhone SDK just 4 days after its release. Moreover, Apple brags that more 1 million people have watched its launch video at its site.

Some of the leading iPhone SDK developers include big names in the industry such as AOL, Electronic Arts, Epocrates, salesforce.com and Sega.

Despite the big turnout, some developers have expressed their disappointment over this much hyped mobile platform. One of the leading underground iPhone developers Jonathan “NerveGas” Zdziarski said in iPhone Atlas, “The Apple SDK, as many have come to find, has arguably crippled much of the functionality that set the iPhone apart when first released. Even simple features like the ability to run a program in the background, have been crippled in the Apple SDK.”

Sayonara 2G Mobile Phones

mobile technology

In Japan, 2G is dying and might be proclaimed dead within this year. A news article reports that out of 4.08 million handsets sent to Japanese stores in January, there was zero delivery of any 2nd generation mobile phones. And as of February, 85% of the users own 3G mobile phones.

It comes as no surprise since Japan is one of the leading countries in terms of mobile technology. But it's not the first country to kill 2G cellphones. South Korea is the first country known to be virtually free of any 2G cellphones.

But U.S. is far from this saying goodbye. Based on industry surveys, only 50% of American mobile users own 3G mobile phones. On the other hand, Western Europe is really far behind with only 10% owning third-generation cellphones.

Consumers Warming Up on Mobile Coupons

mobile marketing

Though consumers, in general, are still annoyed with mobile ads, research firm JupiterResearch reports there is a growing number of consumers who are interested in receiving mobile coupons. But the bottom line, adoption rate remains very low at 1%.

“Mobile coupons are gaining traction among advertisers, and are no longer just a niche tactic, rather they are moving toward the mainstream to more common use. There are definite benefits to using mobile coupons such as real-time offers, geo-targeting, personalization, time-of-day redemption tracking, triggering impulse purchases, and a lower cost of delivery. But while there is tremendous untapped potential, there are still barriers that exist,” said Neil Strother, analyst with JupiterResearch, in a press release.

However, the inability of many retailers to read mobile coupons remains one of the biggest hurdles. The process remains crude as many resort to writing details on paper, entering codes manually or matching the mobile coupon to the member's loyalty card.
